The Zippo lighter was carried by almost every smoker, and a lot of non smokers. Used for every day chores, such as lighting the hexemine stove to cook a meal or a brew (and of course cigarettes). Using lighter fluid, the zippo lasted about 3 days before requiring a refill, by using petrol one could get 7 or 8 days out of it, great for the lungs. To have an inscription put upon the zippo was a general practice. Many type of verses were used to show the soldiers disgust.
My inscription was: "Ye though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, because I am the evilest son of a bitch in the valley."
Another common one was : "When I die I will go to heaven, because I have spent my time in HELL."
